My time as a private music instructor has helped me see the importance of student lead learning, of meeting the student where they are and building upon their previous knowledge. It can be a lot more difficult to do this in a group environment. Over the past several years I have been doing more and more group lessons in music. When I first started these group lessons, the hardest thing for me was teaching to each individual student all at once. It’s impossible to perfectly form content to be exactly what each individual student needs in that moment. I spent a long time fighting with this idea and feeling like a failure when I couldn’t live up to these standards I put on myself. Overtime I was able to assess the general idea of what each student needed would then teach the content that overlapped for the most of the students. I still have a long way to go when it comes to teaching large groups but it is coming a lot easier for me than it was in the beginning.
