This standard holds educators responsible and accountable for their actions on and off duty. It highlights the perception of this profession and how our actions affect its reputation. In my opinion, holding educators responsible for their actions is much more important that protecting the reputation of the profession. I understand that one can affect the other, but holding educators accountable is vital to help ensure learners’ safety.

I have always held myself to this standard when teaching a private music lesson or during my practicums. For me, this means treating the students with respect and empathy while helping them foster respect and empathy towards others. One way I implement this by meeting each student where they are, using positive language, and building a supportive community within learning environments.

Last summer I ran a couple summer camps for my music students and I made sure to incorporate many team building activities. I did this because it was important to me that a sense of community was built so the learners could feel safe and learning could take place. Moving forward, I want to help all student feeling seen and represented when in my classroom by incorporating more sharing circles, different cultures, offering leadership opportunities, and ensuring that everyone’s learning is being respected.
