Creating an inclusive environment is important in a classroom but can be hard to do when you have 20+ students. What helped me to achieve this during my last practicum was to build by lesson plans around the diverse needs of the students I was teaching. There is only so much you can plan for but having an intricate plan is a great place to start. I found I was better off memorizing the plan and pivot around it to build off of what the students’ needs were at that moment. When I tried to follow my plan exactly I found that my attention was too focused on the plan and not focused on the students enough.
An example of this was during my first lesson. It was a math worksheet for the students to get to know me: how many siblings I had, how many pets, etc. We started by sitting at the carpet and answering one question together and then the students went to their desk to work on their worksheet. My plan was to go to any students that were done early and show them when they could do while they wait but I underestimated how many students would be done early. I ended up spending too much time talking to the students who were done that I didn’t have enough time to help all the students that were struggling. When seeing how many students were done early I should have stopped the class and showed them all what to do if they are finished. At the end I was able to bring them all back to the carpet and review the worksheet which was helpful for the students who were struggling but I feel like pivoting earlier on would’ve helped a little more.
